Optimization of enterprise networks to avoid broadcast storms

Many enterprise networks, especially those in critical infrastructures (KRITIS), are based on architectures from the 1990s that have merely been expanded over time, but not fundamentally modernized. Today, technologies such as spanning tree and VLAN are reaching their limits when it comes to efficient bandwidth utilization, rapid recovery in the event of disruptions and coping with increasing complexity. Particularly problematic are broadcast storms that are difficult to localize and can significantly impair the operation of important processes.

Implementation:

A complete technology change would be too complex and cost-intensive for many public bodies. Instead, a step-by-step migration to a modern network technology was developed that builds on the existing VLAN structures while ensuring a high level of security and resilience. This design has already been successfully implemented and rolled out for public clients.

Successful procurement of IT solutions

The successful implementation of digitization projects often requires the procurement of new IT systems or the modernization of existing hardware
and software solutions, such as network technology, server and storage solutions or firewalls. The challenge lies in ensuring that the vendor-neutral solution put out to tender meets the specific requirements and processes of the public client. Implementation:

The technical specifications are precisely determined through a precise requirements analysis and integrated into the tender specifications. This ensures that there are no unpleasant surprises after procurement and during implementation. With many years of experience and in-depth knowledge of the market of providers, manufacturers and technologies, project success is guaranteed at an economical price.

Planning with practical experience

In IT, it is often not enough to simply plan functionalities in theory. To ensure that a solution works under real conditions, it may be necessary to carry out tests in a laboratory or a proof of concept set up specifically for the use case before a decision is made on a company-wide rollout.

Implementation:

Networks, servers, WLAN and other IT environments can be set up, tested and evaluated together with the client in our own laboratory. Alternatively, they can also be set up directly on the client’s premises. The targeted use of practical expertise ensures that the environment can be put into operation stably and reliably.

ABOUT RAINER BURKERT

Rainer Burkert laid the foundations for his sound technical expertise in the fields of electrical engineering and automation technology with his training as an energy electronics technician. Since 2004, he has been involved in the planning and support of IT projects, from enterprise communication networks to international IT services.

He deepened his specialist knowledge with a part-time degree in computer science and a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). Since 2015, he has been working as a freelance IT planner with a special focus on public clients and critical infrastructures (KRITIS).

In 2020, Rainer Burkert was appointed as an ö.b.u.v. expert witness for IT hardware, in particular networks, and has been available as an expert witness to both courts and private clients ever since. His many years of experience and technical expertise make him a valuable partner for public and private clients.
